In an interview with E! News, Swift said that "Mean" is a response to people who criticize whatever she does. She said, "there's constructive criticism, there's professional criticism, and then there's just being mean.

I love this song because I feel this song is very positive.
We don't need to care about What haters say.
This world has many people who will hit you hard.
But we just keep going and don’t give up.
Someday we'll be successful.
And those people who criticize you can’t hit you anymore.
Everytime I listen this song,I feel so powerful.
